9. Why
are you called “Average” Adjusters?
Many people have joked that our profession modestly refers to its members
as just “average”. Joking aside, the reference to “average” is
quite historical, some say dating back many hundreds of years to the
Italian “avere” used
in its code of sealaw to mean “property”. In more recent
usage (over 500 years ago!),
the word was more commonly used to refer to “loss or
damage” in various codes of marine insurance.
Referring to what is an “Average Adjuster”, one of the
more interesting quotations, reputed to have been from an English judicial
decision is “If you are an average adjuster, no definition is
necessary and if you are not an average adjuster, no definition is
possible.”
