QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Understanding
average adjusting.

A practical introduction to our role and the claims process.

Can you arrange insurance for me?

We do not sell or place insurance. We can review your marine risks and insurance arrangements and provide independent observations.

Are you affiliated with a broker or insurer?

Our work is impartial. We can assist a party with a marine interest regardless of its broker or insurer, and our involvement can continue when those relationships change.

Do you carry out marine surveys?

No. Surveyors provide technical expertise about vessels, machinery, cargo and facilities. We draw on their findings and may recommend specialist testing or consulting surveys to establish the cause of a loss and the relevant insurance period.

Who determines the settlement amount?

An average adjustment presents an independent assessment of liability and recoverable amounts using the facts, policy terms and applicable law and practice. It is an expert opinion for the parties’ consideration, rather than a court judgment.

Who can appoint an average adjuster?

Shipowners, cargo interests, insurers, lawyers and other interested parties may appoint an adjuster. Policy terms may govern the appointment and whether the fees form part of an insured claim. Impartiality remains central to the work.

When is an average adjuster needed?

Average adjusting is a specialised profession. Not every marine loss requires an adjuster, but early involvement can help clarify complex claims and protect the interests of the parties.

Are average adjusters lawyers?

A law qualification is not required, and average adjusters do not provide legal advice. Their professional examinations and work require knowledge of marine insurance, maritime law, conventions and relevant precedents.

Is the work limited to general average?

No. It also includes hull and machinery, cargo, loss of revenue, shipbuilding risks, repairers’ liability, salvage and collision claims.

What does “average” mean here?

In marine insurance, “average” refers to loss or damage. The title describes a specialist profession; it is not a rating of the service.

Can you help with an uninsured loss?

Yes. We can quantify third-party claims, including repair costs, lost revenue, interest and other expenses, and help allocate recoveries. We also assist parties and their lawyers in assessing or responding to a claimed amount.
