6. Why haven’t I heard of Average Adjusters before?

First of all, there are relatively few Average Adjusters. The Association of Average Adjusters of Canada, which was formed in 1967, currently has 10 full members although not all are practicing Average Adjusters. In the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, Japan and Canada there are perhaps 150 practicing qualified Average Adjusters, as recognized by their national Associations. An Average Adjuster is not appointed in all cases of a marine loss. However, where the circumstances warrant, Average Adjusters can be of great assistance in guiding the Assured through the initial stages of complex claims, and ensuring that the interests of the parties concerned are properly protected.
