No. Marine surveyors, whether for hull, machinery, cargo, towage approval etc. are hired for their technical expertise in connection with ships, machinery, cargo, terminal facilities etc. In the adjustment of a claim under a marine policy the Average Adjusters will generally seek the opinion of a surveyor on a variety of technical matters. These surveyors play an important part in most insurance claims, whether they act as Underwriters’ surveyors or Owner’s representatives. When it is advisable, we may also suggest that special tests be performed on equipment or components that have failed; these may be metallurgical tests, materials analysis etc. and will assist in the determination of the cause of damage and the allocation of a claim to the correct policy period. Also, when necessary to assist in the determination of a matter of some technical controversy, Average Adjusters may refer to Consulting Surveyors for their particular expertise.
